BMW has launched a global recall of 235,500 BMW Mini vehicles, due to an electronic circuit board can overheat and cause the vehicle to catch on fire.

Around 89,000 vehicles in the U.S. are affected by the move.

According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website, BMW is recalling certain Mini Cooper, Cooper S, Clubman, Cooper JCW, Clubman, Countryman and Convertible models.

“The electric auxiliary water pump that cools the turbocharger has an electronic circuit board that can malfunction and overheat,” the NHTSA’s website said. “The circuit board may smoulder, which could result in a vehicle fire,” the website further said, adding that BMW will notify owners and dealers will replace the water pump free of charge.

The safety recall is expected to begin during February 2012.

Subaru of America announced a major recall for the 2012 model year versions of its Legacy, Outback and Impreza cars. The company has received hundreds of reports of “greater than usual” brake pedal travel in the vehicles.

In the affected Subaru 2012 Legacy, Outback and Impreza, the brake master cylinder can cause the brake pedal to travel farther than expected. This defect can result in the driver misjudging the amount of pressure that is needed in order to stop quickly. In the affected Honda lemon motorcycles, the brakes may not fully release, which can cause a crash or a fire in the rear brake.

The company has issued to its U.S. dealers a “stop-sell” order on all three vehicle lines and is working with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to begin notifying owners affected by this recall.

Ford is recalling almost 129,000 of its 2010-11 Ford Fusions and Mercury Milans because the wheel studs on vehicles equipped with 17-inch steel wheels could break, potentially leading to a wheel coming loose and falling off.

Ford is recalling almost 129,000 of its 2010-11 Ford Fusions and Mercury Milans because the wheel studs on vehicles equipped with 17-inch steel wheels could break, potentially leading to a wheel coming loose and falling off.

Ford informed the National Highway Traffic Administration (N.H.T.S.A.) of the recall that it became aware of the problem in August 2010 when some wheel studs fractured during lug-nut tightening in the plant in Hermosillo, Mexico, where the sedans were assembled.

Ford said that “an extensive investigation” was already under way when, in January 2011, N.H.T.S.A. independently announced its own inquiry into the issue. The agency said its investigation was prompted by consumer complaints about the studs breaking. That included four complaints of a wheel coming off.

In its response to the agency’s investigation, Ford downplayed the possibility that a wheel would come off, saying noise or vibration would prompt owners to go to a dealership. It was also highly unlikely, the automaker said, that all five wheel studs would break at the same time.

Despite Ford’s assurances, the agency said in July that it had enough reason for concern that it was upgrading its investigation.

Ford’s recall report said that as of Sept. 30, 2011, it knew of one front wheel and five rear wheels coming off “that may be attributable” to the defect. Susan Krusel, a spokeswoman for Ford, wrote in an e-mail Friday that the automaker was not aware of any accidents resulting from the problem.
